I have noticed this when I went back to my profile and started filling in all of the fields; two things, but I think they are related. For one, when clicking the "save" button at the bottom of the form, the web page just sits there and never acknowledges that you have saved your settings even if you have, and two, when I look at my posts, all you can see is my Twitter feed link even though I filled in almost all of them; AIM, Skype, and Windows Live. Am I missing something? Or is my data really not getting saved? For when I look at my profile, I can see the values filled out, but they don't show on my posts at the bottom. I'm wondering why this is, for when I put up my site, I want to ensure the same thing doesn't happen to my users. Thanks so much for any feedback. |

Chromebuster,
The YAF Profile form is a temperamental thing. If there is any missing data or something it doesn't like it just sits there and waits for you to figure it out. There's a lack of error response logic, in other words. If you change your email address, for instance, and someone else has the address you enter you won't receive any indication of it. You may be missing a required field, like Display Name.
Hope that helps you,
-TP |

I'll speak to the YAF leaders about this. It sure looks like that's what needs to happen. Thank you. Though it is hard for screen reader users to find required fields in YAF though because their asterisks are not labeled very efficiently. There is another release in the works I believe, so I'll talk about that kind of improvement over there. |

You're going to rewrite a lot of the YAF edit profile page and control(s) if you want it to have better performance and to be more intuitive. That's one of those things I fought and fought and fought until I just used SueetieService and WCF to make it ajaxy. Edited by user Friday, February 8, 2013 10:01:51 AM(UTC)

Obviously you don't have any issues with your stuff showing up at the bottom of each post. I'll view your profile then and see if I'm missing anything syntactically. |

Thing is, other folks are going to have issues when they try to use YAF's cp_editprofile to change certain things. A lot of YAF's forms are old school and non-ajaxy. I literally went through the entire control on that page (EditUsersProfile.ascx) and reworked what I needed to, both on the front and in the code behind. I may have changed the page itself too, I don't remember. I definitely added some methods to SueetieService. See attached for what I remember. Edited by user Friday, February 8, 2013 6:10:53 PM(UTC)

Thanks. I'll get that tomorrow. Though editing the code-behind is not easy if you're only trying to edit one file, right? I have never edited the code-behind on anything I've installed on a web server, so it's new to me. I mean, how exactly would you go about doing that? Would you have to download the developer package and compile the YAF project, and then replace the existing forum with your recompiled one? And then how would you do that without deleting existing posts? Thanks for the feedback though; it's appreciated. |

With the source code you could then make any changes to the YAF profile code, compile, and upload the /forum/bin/DLLs. There would be no data loss. You'd be entering a new nerdy domain with Atomo. New thrills, but lots of new spills if unfamiliar with Visual Studio. -TP Edited by user Saturday, February 9, 2013 6:53:25 AM(UTC)

Are you kidding me? That's exactly where I want to be! I plan to fall into the open source development world just as soon as my priorities allow, but I'm strong enough to follow instructions for code modifications, I think. Thanks for the encouragement though; much appreciated. At least we'll have one more before ASP.net dies. Which it better not in my time! For I have had a brewing idea for the longest time for Sueetie, and I can't wait till I can actually make it happen. Anyway, I'll post another topic to talk about my idea since it doesn't belong here, obviously. |
